coaching for creative entrepreneurs

A Little about me

my creative journey

I did not begin my career as an artist.  As a child my mother and grandmother spent countless hours with me painting, sewing, and knitting but when I began elementary school I was taught that if I couldn't draw, the arts were not for me.  It was not until my mid 20's  that I was re-introduced to my own creative practice.  I am now a full time working artist.

Prior to my plunge into the arts, I spent many years working with some of the most vulnerable in our society.    I have worked with women planning their release from federal custody, youth as they prepared to leave the shelter system, individuals with developmental differences looking to find their place in community, and women who are survivors of abuse and trauma embark on their healing journey.   No matter who I was working with or what the circumstances, I knew these things to be true; there is great power in community, people are the experts of their own lives, and it is important to focus on a persons strengths rather than their weaknesses.

These are the principles that guide me today as I work with people who are finding and exploring their creativity for the first time, and with artists who are looking to grow their practice and embark on the journey of creative entrepreneurship.  I work with artists at all stages of their journey and understand that everyone is going to have goals and aspirations unique to them.

When I made the shift from social services to creative entrepreneurship, I started with a facebook page and selling my work on consignment at one store.  I now have a full-time studio, a busy teaching schedule, am a patreon creator, and continue to sell in stores throughout the province.   I love working with artists and art groups, and blogging.  One of my goals is to start a podcast.  I can't wait to chat with you about your journey and your goals!

What can coaching do?

Help you set gentle goals

Maybe you know that you are a creative at heart but you don't know where to begin.  Maybe you are an artist who wants to take the plunge into creative entrepreneurship, or maybe you have no idea what your next steps are, but you know that you have something to offer the world.  No matter where you are in your journey, creative coaching can help you set gentle goals and make a plan for achieving them that works for you.

build confidence & help you nurture your creative self

For many artists, even saying the words aloud 'I am an artist' can trigger an intense emotional response.  It takes courage to learn something new, and even more courage to share a part of yourself with the world.  Often we are mired in and weighted down by other peoples expectations and ideas of what creativity should look like.    Creative coaching can help you nurture your creative spirit, help you integrate creativity into your life and help you understand your unique gifts.

build your creative business

You want to begin or expand a creative business and you have no idea where to begin.  You may even be afraid that you don't know what you don't know.  I have been there and I get it.  I can help you make plans for short and long terms goals and help you set tangible next steps so that you can achieve them.  Have questions about selling your work, marketing, branding, social media, building your online presence, finding your niche, exploring different income streams, taking on studio space, scaling your business, teaching, program development, or something else unique to you?  Lets talk about it!

what does creative coaching look like?

In a creative coaching session I will work with you to set gentle goals.   I will ask pointed and thoughtful questions to help you address and overcome barriers and tap into your resources and social capital.  Creative coaching is not an art lesson but rather a way to help you begin or continue your own creative journey.

If you are already an established or emerging artist, I will help you set some short and long term goals related to growing your creative practice and your professional development.  This may include things like growing your audience, teaching workshops and classes, developing an online presence, exploring avenues for selling your work, or finding your unique voice in the market.

Each session will run for approximately 45 minutes and will be done over the phone.   Expect 1-3 sessions depending on individual needs.  I will work with you for as long as you like and in a way that makes sense for you.  Sessions may also take place in person at The Hive Encaustic Studio.

Call 519-497-7646 or email kim@edgeofgrey.ca to learn more or to book  your session.

Each session is $35 plus hst.

During the Covid 19 pandemic, I will be offering creative coaching sessions free of charge for families of and individuals with developmental differences, women in or connected to our shelter systems, and women engaged with our justice system.
